Tropical 7s took place in Tampa, Florida over the weekend and Atlantis Rugby had 8 sides in action. A significant number of our usual feeder programs were competing in Europe on various spring break tours this year, so it is a testament to all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes that we were able to put so many teams together filled with outstanding young student-athletes.
That doesn’t happen without a lot of help from the home clubs and competitions that train these players on a day-to-day basis and we can’t thank all of them enough. Whether it is coaching, officiating, volunteering, or doing all the administrative tasks it takes to keep rugby going we want you to know that we appreciate all of you and we continue to be blown away by the quality of the players that we receive on a yearly basis. Thank you!
The boys put 5 teams into the tournament, competing in U14, U16 Open, U16 Elite, U18 Open, and U18 Elite while the girls competed in U14, U16 Elite, and U18 Elite. It was an overall outstanding weekend for the boys who put up a combined 21-7-1 record and earned top 3 finishes in U18 Elite (third), U16 Elite (second), and U14 (second). They also scored a total of 718 points and allowed 356 for a point differential of +362. The boys were not shut out in any of their matches while shutting out their opponents a total of six times, and each side had at least one.
The girls were more severely impacted by player availability than the boys and weren’t able to bring home hardware this time around, but approximately 14 players were given an opportunity to represent Atlantis Rugby for the first time, and the returning players were given an opportunity to step into larger roles at the highest levels of competition which will serve them well in their continued development as young rugby players.
