Grenada Rugby World 7s took place on December 6 and 7 and once again the tournament was an amazing opportunity for Atlantis Rugby to compete against top quality players from around the world. Our men’s side went 4-2 across two days to take second place in their division while the women went 2-3-1 to take third.
In pool play on Friday the men lost to Caribbean Kings 21-14 but bounced back with a 41-0 victory over Grenada Greenz and a 29-0 victory over Legion to book a spot in the Cup Championship which would be played as a pool play format for the top 4 teams. The women went 1-1-1 on Friday with a 29-5 victory over Legion, a close 12-10 loss to Find Rugby Now, and a 10-10 draw against Caribbean Queens. The format of the women’s competition would see a repeat of Friday’s schedule on Saturday.
For those who are unfamiliar with the opposing teams: the Caribbean Kings and Queens are made up of players from a few different countries throughout the Caribbean, the Grenada Greenz are the local team, Legion 7s is from Britain and supports the Royal British Legion which is an organization that provides lifelong support to their Armed Forces community, and Find Rugby Now is based out of London and is devoted to growing and supporting rugby with players representing a range of countries in their roster.
On Saturday the men started strong with a 21-10 victory over Find Rugby Now and a 12-10 victory over Caribbean Kings. That set up a showdown with Butchers for the Championship. The Butchers are a Welsh Elite Invitational side and they claimed a 38-7 victory against us to win the tournament championship.
The women also started Saturday off with a win, beating Legion 24-5. From there they played close matches in a 20-14 loss to Find Rugby Now and a 14-12 loss to Caribbean Queens to finish in third. The two teams combined to go 6-5-1 with 220 points scored and 145 allowed.
Sponsors for this trip included Dunkin’, Hahn Enterprises, Hancock Builders, The Basket Tree, D&B Thermal, Rosato Law Offices, Vimco, Ryan Masonry, Boyd Gaming, Tatonka, and Rugby Environmental.
We were also joined by Fil Keuppens and Pickle Juice for the first time and they were generous enough to set up a link to help our program. Anyone who purchases Pickle Juice products from here (https://picklepower.com/collections/pickle-juice) will be buying an amazing product, thanking a supporter of ours, and supporting Atlantis Rugby!.
